Braintree District Council approved the replacement and likely expansion of an intensive poultry farm at its meeting on 2 June, despite receiving over 1,000 objections to the application.

Local residents organising against the expansion plans of an intensive poultry unit (IPU) in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, came together to discuss their opposition strategy.

Around 70 residents of Bampton, a historic Oxfordshire market town that served as the filming location for Downton Abbey, have gathered to oppose a planning application by industrial poultry breeders PD Hook, to build four broiler “breeder” sheds.

Dozens of Weybread residents took part in a peaceful protest outside the Crown Inn pub on Friday 15 May to express opposition to agricultural giant Cranswick’s controversial planning application for an industrial egg incubator in the village.

An independent review has found fundamental flaws in the environmental assessments submitted for a planning application to expand a major broiler expansion at Neuadd Isaf Farm, near Penybont, Llandrindod Wells. 

The government must amend the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) to halt the expansion of factory farming, according to a letter signed by Communities Against Factory Farming, and Dale Vince.

A member of the public has uncovered alleged illegal activity at Willoughbridge Lodge Farm, Market Drayton, with multiple dead calves being buried on site instead of being collected, as required by law. The farm is also the site of the controversial application for an intensive poultry unit.

Campaigners are urging South Gloucestershire Council to reject a planning application that would significantly expand Pilgrim’s UK’s Westerleigh abattoir, increasing slaughter capacity from 19,000 to 25,000 pigs per week, an additional 6,000 animals, bringing the total number of factory‑farmed pigs killed on site to 1.3 million per year.

Plans have been submitted to double the size of an intensive pig unit near Matfen, increasing the number of pigs confined indoors from 950 to 1,900 at any one time. Local residents and campaigners warn the expansion would intensify existing concerns about odour, traffic and environmental impact in the rural community.
